Fruit operations atop the mountain officially ended in the Summer of 2018 after over a century of providing delicious Apples, Peaches, and other fruit across the country. Despite the loss of the apple trees, Twin Mountain Farm remains a thriving operation.
Since 1986, Polled Hereford and Black Baldy Angus cattle have been able to graze the sweet orchard grass on the mountain. Our cattle enjoy open access to much of the farm, with freedom to eat grass where they want, when they want. Be careful if you come to visit, because you might find them in peculiar locations after you cross the cattle guards!
Twin Mountain Farm periodically does light hardwood timber operations using methods like a select-cut. A select cut is a forestry practice in which individual trees or small groups of trees are selected for harvesting, leaving the majority of the forest intact. By carefully surveying and selecting the trees to be harvested, our local professional loggers can help to increase the biodiversity, improve forest health, and reduce erosion on our forest land.
While the apple orchard operation slowly died out over the past few decades, a great investment was made in clearing the old orchard of the trees and stumps. The remaining cleared, fertile land on the flat mountain peaks allows our operation to generate a healthy crop of grass hay each year to help our cattle through the tough winters!
